The staff at Osteria Il Centro takes pride in the fact that “nobody does Italian food” quite like them. This upscale yet casual Italian neighborhood eatery, which has been named the best Kansas City Italian restaurant by Zagat, has an extensive wine list with over 10,000 reserve list bottles and an alluring dinner menu full of Italian specialties.

Their menu consists of a variety of soups, salads, and antipasti such as osteria bruschetta with tomato, capers, fresh basil, and parmesan on grilled bread; goat cheese and garlic bread; and shrimp carciofi with six shrimp served over artichoke bottoms with garlic lemon butter.

When it comes to entrées, Osteria Il Centro offers seven different pizzas such as the pollo bruschetta with grilled chicken, diced tomatoes, garlic, basil, mozzarella, Parmigiano Reggiano, and Romano cheese; the Carciofi with artichoke, roasted red peppers, spinach, and red sauce topped with mozzarella, and feta cheese; and the basic Margherita with some added goat cheese. There are also a variety of primi choices, such as the cannelloni with two soft crepes filled with sautéed chicken, spinach, and mushrooms topped with tomato cream sauce; and chicken walnut pasta with sliced chicken breast tossed with penne in a gorgonzola cream sauce. Secondi choices include five lamb chops that are marinated, grilled, and topped with a rosemary brandy sauce, and pan-seared orange roughy topped with crabmeat, sautéed spinach, and garlic lemon butter served with herb-tomato pasta.

The dessert menu is comprised of six dishes ranging from a tiramisu to a chocolate crème brulée, and there are two dessert wines available to diners – a Muscat and a Vidal ice wine.

Osteria Il Centro is open for dinner Monday to Thursday from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m, and Friday to Sunday from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m.

The Restaurant at 1900 is a great place to have a highly interesting meal prepared by a James Beard 2020 Semifinalist Best Chef: Midwest, Linda Duerr. You never know what surprises await at Restaurant at 1900 because Chef Duerr is continuously reinventing specials based on the availability of certain local ingredients as well as her own creative culinary inspiration. Chef Duerr is from New England, and her cuisine is influenced from that part of the country as well as Italian and French culinary styles.


Cascone's Italian Restaurant

The original Cascone's has served classic Sicilian cuisine for 62 years, in a cozy space with a retro feel. Even when crowded during a weekday lunch hour, seating is quick, and service is typically fast, efficient and friendly. Manicotti Florentine, with veal and spinach, shrimp Alfredo, Jennie Cascone's Canneloni – a delicious combo of ultra-thin pasta paired with creamy ricotta, spicy Italian sausage, sweet tomato sauce and gooey mozzarella – and refreshing lemon drop martinis, are crowd pleasers. Veal lovers will appreciate three tasty options and fish fans will enjoy Norwegian Salmon, which features Cajun honey glaze and a side of Fettuccini Alfredo. Because meals here can sometimes be pricey, the Early Special Menu is a welcome deal that includes choice of entree, bread and butter, soup or salad and spumoni.

Best kept secret in Kansas City, but judging by the place on Friday night, it looks like the word is out!

No matter the wait, I'll keep coming back for the best Italian food in Kansas City.

My wife and I had yet another extraordinary meal at IL Centro on Friday night. We get out quite a bit, but never find a place as consistent and good as here.

Great staff, great food and great time! Can't wait to get back.

My wife and I love the fact that Il Centro is our neighborhood restaurant. We love Garlic. We love the atmosphere. We love prosciutto. We love pasta. We love wine. and, we love having someone to look over a wine list with to get a selection that we might not have chosen on our own. We like to be close to the plaza&hellipbut, it is nice to be slightly off plaza as well. We love to be cozy - and that's IL Centro!

Worst Food in KC – This is most definitely the worst place in KC. I read raving reviews of this place online and decided to try it myself. Upon arrival, I was told it would be a 45 minute wait. Which is to be expected at any restaurant on a Saturday night. After waiting 45 minutes in the entry way in single digit temperatures, we moved into the front door/greeting area for the remainder of our 1 1/2 hour wait. This restaurant is loud, crowded, and poorly set up. After we finally got seated, we did have good service from the waitstaff. There were several LOUD tables, including one that had a man wearing his napkin as a mask. I realize that this is not the problem of the restaurant, however it is not good 'ambiance' as the rest of the reviews I read stated. Our salads tasted like bagged grocery store salad that hadn't been rinsed. My husband's lamb chops (ordered medium) were cooked inconsistantly. One was medium, one was medium well, another medium rare, etc. The rosemary mashed potatoes were runny and tasted as though they were nothing more than instant mashed potatoes with some seasoning on top. My chicken tagliata was horrible. The chicken tasted like a frozen grilled chicken patty with some frozen mixed vegetables on the side. This food was awful!! We only ate it because at this point we'd been at the restaurant for over 2 hours and wanted to LEAVE. NEVER AGAIN! I would NOT RECOMMEND THIS RESTAURANT TO ANYONE.

Also, this restaurant was full of brookside, country club plaza, JOCO scum.


Food Critics: The Best Italian Dishes In Kansas City In 2019

Whether you begin a meal with "buon appetite" or "tuck in," Central Standard's Food Critics can point you in the direction of a hearty dish personalized to your palette.

Pitch food writer Liz Cook says we're living in a good time to find a range of Italian cuisine. Prior to the early 1990s, she says, American perception of Italian dining was locked into the idea of cheap and plentiful pasta, leaving little room for fine dining.

"Starting around the '80s we see this regional shift where we're bringing in new dishes, and then Italian cuisine kind of becomes more in the fine dining realm. Now we’re seeing a little bit more of an interplay between those," Cook says.

Sometimes a range is possible even under one chef, like at Ragazza, which recently moved from Westport to Main Street in the Southmoreland neighborhood.

Food writer Mary Bloch loves the restaurant's giant meatall.

"You can share it with the whole table. There's great red sauce, and they've got focaccia to mop it up with," Bloch says.

KCFoodGuys.com writer Carlton Logan suggests going beyond the basics with Italian food.

"There are some great places that have raviolis with some very interesting fillings, shrimp or just a pesto sauce, and I think sometimes we need to think about those as well as just the basic what we're used to as Americans," Logan says.

    Amatriciana rigatoni. It’s made with pancetta instead of the more traditional guanciale. – Polipo Alla Diavola. That’s spicy grilled octopus, potatoes, broccoli rabe, capers, and olives. – Amatriciana and lasagna.– Bolognese and the amatriciana. They're on the Four Kings of Rome menu. Also, take advantage of it still being summer to order the heirloom tomato salad with buffalo mozzarella, peaches, basil and pomegranate dressing.
  • The Antler Room (not an Italian restaurant) – Burrata tortellini. That’s pistachio pesto and pecorino. Who can resist pillows of pasta with burrata? – Tableside mozzarella with fresh tomatoes. It's not too late. Go now. – Ryan's lamb sausage pasta with gnocchetti. That's sheep's milk cheese, summer squash, pistachio, and fava bean tapenade. – Chicken Marsala. Served with mushrooms and Marsala wine, garlic mashers and spinach. – Porchetta. The meat is served with turnip mash, currently peaches and onions, accompanied by mint-ginger salsa verde. in Lawrence – Lasagne bolognese or Italian sausage pizza.– Any octopus dish. The current one has potatoes, olives and chilis, a classic combination.
    – Bone & The Hare. That's black truffle, silky rabbit ragu, carrot-top pesto, floury house-made cappellacci (think: dumplings). – Braised lamb shank. Served with a salty, cheese-drunk mushroom risotto that's more comforting than any alfredo. They have good house-made limoncello, too. – Clam dip and parmesan clam toast. Sip a draft beer and pick through a cold, creamy clam dip with a bright pop of salmon roe while a server shucks oysters nearby. The parmesan clam toast is a great, overlooked appetizer: tender clams, crunchy toast, and deep flavors from the dried tomatoes and parmesan. (not an Italian restaurant) – Georgian soup dumplings. So many people think pasta when the think Italian food that it's worth talking about the Antler Room's house made pastas. even if most of them are inspired by other national cuisines. These soup dumplings are pasta dumplings filled with a rich, chile-spiced pork and beef broth. (If you've never had soup dumplings before: nibble a mouse-sized hole in the dumpling and slurp out the broth. Then you’re safe to chow down.) Start with the heirloom tomatoes with tempura corn while they're still in season. – Go to town on classic Italian comforts in American portions while you perch in a romantic booth with a plaque that has the names of all of the couples who got engaged there. The Sunday champagne brunch, which features a pasta station and the restaurant's famous rum cake, is a great value. – Jazz. This is a bowl of olive oil tossed with parmesan and enough minced garlic that you'll still be tasting it three days later. – Spiedini. The skewered chicken dish has been their signature since they opened in 1989. Also order a crispy stuffed artichoke or an ice-cold iceberg salad dredged in Parmigiano-Reggiano.
    – Chicken parmesan panini and lasagna.– Bucatini All'Amatriciana. The bucatini noodle is like a spaghetti noodle but it's much bigger and is hollow. This is served with a spicy red sauce. The eggplant parmesan is excellent. – Scimeca's grilled sausage and peppers. The bacon and potato pizza is wonderful, and the shrimp diablo is divine. – Supper Club experience: multicourse dinners, communal seating, family style service . it's a great way to enjoy food and meet old friends and make new ones. – Traditional Italian pasta dishes and pizzas. Monday night pizza special $6. Tuesday night select bottles are half price. And on Thursday, you can get homemade gnocchi with sauce for $18.

This is a restaurant my parents have visited regularly for years. Ernest is basically a family member at this point. I love coming in and hearing about his marathon training and seeing his insanely amazing art! Seriously, his paintings look like photographs. I think the community, food, wine collection, and ambiance are the best in Kansas City, and it makes me miss living in this city.

Went for a special dinner. The service provided was exemplary! Definitely 5 star worthy! The food was fantastic, delicious, and reasonably priced. I would highly recommend Osteria ll Centro is a great dinner or date place.

Phenomenal. No exaggeration! This restaurant is darling. The ambiance is cozy. Before I forget let me mention E R N E S T our delightful server. He was awesome . Again not an exaggeration. He gave excellent recommendations and friendly service the entire night. What I loved most was he observed instead of intruded. More than a few time I noticed Ernest stop by our table to see how things were and where most servers would interrupt a conversation to ask "how is everything?" he let my husband and me enjoy our food and company. Now the food was SO delicious. Exactly what we were looking for and arguably the best Italian food I've had. Everything was fresh, piping hot, and flavorful. My mouth is watering just thinking about it. On a Saturday night at 8:30 we waited about 30 minutes to be seated which was no problem to us, the host kept us updated with time approximations and he gave us seating options. CAN NOT WAIT to get back to this restaurant. I've already told my husband I want to eat here for our anniversary. Try it you won't be disappointed!

Absolutely delicious and totally worth the 96 mile drive for us! My husband and I went there for our anniversary dinner yesterday on 2/10. If you want to be seated immediately- get there soon after they open! We arrived at about 4:15 PM, were seated immediately, and by 5:00 PM, they were PACKED! The ambiance of the restaurant is phenomenal. It is a smaller restaurant- max occupancy is 76 I believe- but this actually improves the atmosphere, in my opinion. My husband had the chicken walnut pasta and I had the lamb chops. Both were absolutely amazing. The vegetables that came with my lamb were perfectly cooked and the mashed potatoes were equally as good. For an appetizer we got the calamari, and just like everything else, it was amazing. The Parmesan bowl that comes with the calamari is a wonderful and tasty addition. Ernest was the most warm and pleasant waiter, very friendly and knowledgeable of the menu, and we had a great time with him. He went over the wine list with us and then the restaurant gifted us with a bottle of wine for our anniversary. He is a great person and a valuable asset to the restaurant. Truly a dinner to remember. Thank you so much for a magical dinner. We will be telling all of our friends and family about this wonderful restaurant.

The place was small quaint and very crowded. the service was excellent. the food. Veil was delicious.. the Cosmopolitan was good I liked it. the shrimp on the artichokes as an appetizer was delightful. our dessert which was some type of chocolate cake they have was very decadent. I thoroughly enjoyed the service the food the atmosphere and I would like to go back to this place


Food Critics: The Best Italian Food In Kansas City

Italian food. Those two words may bring up images of a pasta dish with red sauce, or perhaps a thick square of lasagna. Throw in a glass of wine, and you're set for a cold winter night.

Some local chefs are also putting a creative spin on the cuisine. From old-school favorites to some new takes, our food critics on KCUR’s Central Standard searched out the best Italian food in and around Kansas City.

Here are their recommendations:

  • Bella Napoli — Pugliese pizza. With caramelized onion, mozzarella and spicy oil.
  • Bella Napoli — Pasta Amatriciana. Rigatoni with pancetta, garlic and spicy tomato sauce.
  • The Rieger. I usually have a hard time deciding which pasta to order because I honestly usually have a hard time visualizing some of the ingredients that chef Howard Hanna puts together. Like duck confit with apricot, chestnuts and mushrooms. But I’ve never been disappointed they are all great. I tend to gravitate to the more veggie-centric ones.
  • The Antler Room. All the pasta dishes are incredibly interesting and creative. Current favorites include rigatoni with duck confit and cavatelli with braised lamb.
  • Michael Smith's Finding Guido. He’s revamped his menu to a heavy Italian focus, and he is offering a five-course pasta tasting. He serves all different kinds of pasta, from gnocchi to radiatori. They’ve got spicy ones, they’ve got wild boar — it just runs the gamut. Any ingredient you can envision is in all of these pastas.
  • Carmen’s Café — fettuccine al diablo. Served with shrimp, mussels, clams, squid and a spicy tomato sauce in a huge bowl.
  • Lidia’s — grilled octopus. With warm potatoes, caper, red onion and Gaeta olives.
  • Lidia’s — bistecca. Bone-in ribeye steak with rosemary sea salt. Served with garlic fried potatoes.
  • Jasper’s — linguine fra diavolo con scampi. Pasta with a spicy tomato sauce with chili peppers, garlic and shrimp.
  • Jasper’s — baked lasagna. Layered with ricotta cheese, Italian sausage and Jasper’s tomato sauce.
  • Story — lobster tagliatelle. It’s a perennial favorite served with Swiss chard and burrata. I also love the risottos and octopus.
  • Dominic’s Casual Italian. Owner Dominic Cuccia started with a small drive-thru stand next to a car wash that he owns on North Oak Trafficway, and he now has two locations. This is the place to have it your way. Mix and match five different types of pasta with three different sauces that he makes from scratch daily from his mother’s recipes. Spedini bowls with chicken or shrimp can be topped with your choice of sauce. The drive-thru is located on the side of the building, and you can order online ahead of time.
  • Cascone’s Italian Restauranton North Oak Trafficway. Since 1954, the Cascones have been serving up their family’s Italian recipes, like so many other Italian families in the area. The menu is overwhelming with so many old-school choices, but some standouts here are veal limonata, homemade gnocchi with ricotta cheese in vodka sauce and slow-cooked pork neck bones in sugo (or Sunday gravy, as it’s commonly known).
  • Papa Keno’s Crossroads. French chef Philippe Lechevin opened his second Papa Keno’s location in the former Snow & Co. space. The menu includes a variety of specialty pizzas, Sicilian pizza, thick-crust deep-dish pizza, calzones, salads and sandwiches on fresh-baked bread. Get "The Industry," which has double pepperoni and double extra cheese.
  • Tower Tavern. One of my favorite hidey-holes in the Union Hill neighborhood. It serves a wide variety of sandwiches, pizzas and strombolis. Get the Italian beef sandwich or the pepperoni stromboli served with fries, pasta salad or housemade potato chips because everyone needs more carbs with their carbs. Order a beer for the perfect carb trifecta!
  • Mario’s in Westport. Sadly, there isn’t much time to enjoy Mario’s. Owner John Waid plans to close this location at the end of this year. But if you are a fan of their meatball grinders like I am, you’ll want to make one last trip in to get a great grinder. It’s an Italian roll that’s stuffed with meat, cheese and sauce, then toasted. Eat warm!
  • Italian Delight by Avelluto. This place is so charming, from the decor to the Avelluto family who owns and runs the place. It is like dining in a large Italian dining hall during a huge Italian wedding. Loud and busy with solid Italian food favorites. Order Chicken Champagne or any of the tasty and delicious salads. The eggplant parmigiana is also good. They serve wine at dinner and have a tasty tiramisu.
  • 715 Restaurant in Lawrence. Few other places Italian places manage to keep it old-school and modern all at the same time. From breaking down whole animals to making pasta by hand, 715 is a great place to stop in for lunch or dinner, or just to grab a drink with a friend. At dinner, get the classic lasagna bolognese or the Italian sausage pizza with heritage pork sausage, fennel cream, crispy leeks and tarragon.

My father’s parents were born in Sicily at the turn of the last century. They could never afford to eat in a restaurant and they would have considered it a ridiculous waste of money to do so. My grandmother was an excellent cook who baked her own breads and pastries, raised her own chickens and slaughtered them in the backyard, canned fruits and vegetables — all in a city on the “wrong side of the tracks.”

  • The restaurant meals closest in spirit to my Grandmother’s cooking in Kansas City include Lidia’s Kansas City (owner Lidia Bastianich, an Italian-born immigrant herself, has a sensitive pulse on the journey from her childhood roots from the formerly Italian city of Pula, now considered Croatia to America), with its distinctive dishes and excellent wine list.
  • Also: Jasper’s Restaurant, which has evolved over the years from a neighborhood café serving pasta, steaks and fried chicken to, later, an elegant fine dining venue, to its current incarnation — which melds many details from its past into a casual dining experience with first-rate cuisine and many sophisticated touches. Recommendations at Lidia’s and Jasper’s: any veal or chicken dish. Things that taste like they took all day to cook are kind of a signature of both places.
  • Anthony’s on Grand. This restaurant totally captures the essence of what an Italian restaurant was like, post-World War II, when many U.S. GIs got their first taste of “real” Mediterranean cuisine (including pizza) after they had been stationed overseas in the 1940s. In the four decades since the Spino family opened the original Anthony’s as a lunch counter, it has become a touchstone restaurant for diners who still long for that experience of home cooking, Sicilian-style, with generous servings and modest prices. It’s one of those Italian restaurants where you walk in hungry and you waddle out fat and full.
